Heaven for golfers Ages ago, John Denver sang something about "Almost Heaven, West Virginia.

Country Roads, take me home. To the place I belong. West Virginia, mountain mama. Take me home, country roads." It was kind of a theme song where I went to school at Sir Wilfrid Laurier University. Years later, I find out I really do love West Virginia the food, the people and the golf courses. Yep, when you get a hole in one, you tend to love a lot of things. So, Oglebay's Speidel Golf Club (thanks, Arnie) is, without a doubt, my very favourite course in the world right now, my ace coming with a seven iron (to save face I need to say into a very, very stiff breeze) from 134 yards out on cost of pandora bracelets and charms the ninth hole. But I can also say West Virginia not only has tremendous golf and world class fishing, the price is right. As the state slogan says, it really is "wild and wonderful." Why West Virginia a seven or so hour drive from Toronto? It's a pretty attractive alternative to spring golf in Canada. "West Virginia is great driving time from Canada," said West Virginia's super friendly (actually, I think everybody in the state is super friendly) marketing manager Betty Cutlip. "We're very affordable. there's a lot of outdoor recreation and it's one of the safest states in the pandora bangle nation. "Spring came early to the Mountain State this year. April was quite warm, almost summer like. Normally, May and June are beautiful warm months, 80F (about 27C)." Our trip started in the state's Northern Panhandle: Wheeling, home to Oglebay Resort, which has Arnold Palmer and Robert Trent Jones, Sr., layouts. Oh, and it's also home of the Tim Baines hole in one I'm sure it's already immortalized on the clubhouse walls. It was then off to the Mountain Lakes for a state park experience, the Adirondack style Stonewall Resort, with its Arnold Palmer Signature design course. "We're surrounded by nature, there's no development here," said Steven Ludwig, Stonewall's sales and marketing director. "When you leave on the first hole, you don't come back until you're done 18. People love us for that West Virginia hospitality. People here are naturally helpful and friendly. You can get the upscale experience and still be relaxed." Then, we headed south, to Pipestem Resort State Park. Considered the year round crown jewel of the West Virginia State Parks, Pipestem has one George Cornish designed 18 hole championship course overlooking the Bluestone Canyon, plus a nine hole par 3 course. The fishing is special, with some great deals available, including a two day An Angler's Dream, a Trout's Nightmare package, for $319 per person that includes an overnight stay, horseback ride in and out of Bluestone River Gorge, four complete meals, snacks, beverages and a fly my pandora charms fishing guide with instruction. The Resort at Glade Springs was up next. Two words. Out. Standing. The variety of courses was nice Cobb, Stonehaven, Woodhaven ("Stonehaven on steroids"). Especially on the Cobb course ("Pinehurst No. 2, with more character"), the greens are daunting and spectacular at the same time. "Just to hit the green, you're not home," Mike James, the golf director said. "You can be sitting at the 100 yard mark and come up two clubs short. and you have a put from 70 100 feet. A 150 foot putt? It could happen." There was plenty to do other than golf at the resort: Tennis, volleyball, a spa, laser tag, archery, basketball court and even a 10 lane bowling alley. The trip came to a conclusion at Lakeview Resort in Morgantown, a college town in the north central part of the state. What a way to close! The sign outside the clubhouse says it all: Pay What You Play. Take your scorecard to Legends Sports Bar and Grille and pay one cent a stroke for your first beer. And while you're there, chat about the 620 yard 18th hole. Nobody (yep, nobody) has ever reached in two. "You will not find any cookie cutter golf courses in West Virginia," said Betty Cutlip, the state's tourism marketing manager. "Positioned among raging rivers, amongst rolling hills and hiding in peaceful valleys, West Virginia's range of golf courses offer a challenging game with stunning backdrops."
