Is Sports Direct shutting down Three people this week have told me that the Sports Direct down the road is shutting down.

They'd walked or cycled past and noticed the massive marker pen signs in the windows saying 'ALL STOCK MUST GO' and 'STOCK LIQUIDATION' and assumed they'd seen the tell tale signs of a closing down sale. Towards the end of the week yellow pieces of paper were stuck on to the windows on the outside so they got scrappy and weather beaten spelling out 'LAST FEW DAYS'. In the market for a pair of goggles, I went down to take a look. Maybe I could grab an unmissable bargain. But in the store it was business as usual. What would you think? This is Money's Rachel Rickard Straus assumed the store was closing down is she going mad? The shop is not closing at all. I can only imagine therefore that Sports Direct means 'all stock must go' in the traditional sense that that is the conventional aim of a retailer. Similarly perhaps they are opting for a more liberal definition of 'liquidisation' to mean converting stock into cash through sales, rather than infering something to do with bankruptcy or shutting up shop. I passed a store in East Ham last night and it had the same thing. So I asked the Sports Direct press office today and they said it was a 'nationwide promotion'. What a not closing down sale looks like: Sports Direct on Kensington High Street is not shutting down at all However Sports Direct said 'the promotion has been running for a month and you are the only person to ask!!!' I found some goggles, by the way, but found the labelling a little interesting there too (see below). They are decidedly not 30 per cent off more like 17. Of course the label does not strictly say '30 per cent off' there is a tiny weeny little 'up to' that precedes the '30 per cent', which is naturally in big letters. Again the cynic wonders whether they are relying in us not doing the maths or not noticing the 'up to'. If you're going to put 'up to' before a discounted amount, the number sort of becomes arbitrary anyway. Why stop at 30. I mean why not just say 'up to 90 per cent' and be done with it. Anyway, I'd be keen to hear your thoughts and experiences.
